Exercise Physiology

curling small therapy weight with help from the therapistOur Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) Jasmine uses exercise as a form of medication to help practice members treat, manage, and prevent various chronic conditions, diseases, illnesses, or injuries. Jasmine will do this by developing safe and effective exercise programs that are best appropriate for you.

Conditions an AEP Can Help With

If you have any of the following, you may be able to benefit from exercise physiology:

  • Arthritis
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Chronic back pain
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Mental health conditions (anxiety, depression, etc.)
  • Metabolic disease
  • Neurological conditions
  • Osteoporosis
  • Shoulder injury

First visit: initial consultation

During your initial consultation Jasmine will ask you some questions to determine your health status, the issues causing you the most concern, and your exercise/physical activity history. You will also complete some physical assessments to assess your current fitness level which will enable an appropriate exercise program to be designed.

Jasmine will also discuss your exercise and health goals and strategies to help you achieve these goals. For example, if you are struggling with activities of daily living such up getting up from a chair, or washing the dishes due to lower back pain, Jasmine can design an exercise program to help improve your ability to complete these tasks.

Second visit: exercise program

Within the following appointment, you will be taken through the tailored exercise program that has been developed to help meet your specific health goals. Jasmine will also discuss the role of exercise in helping to treat or manage your conditions and the benefits it will have on improving your overall quality of life.

As balance declines when people get older they are more susceptible to falling. If they do fall they can fracture a hip or wrist. Jasmine provides balance training to help her senior patients avoid falls by improving their balance and strength.

I have high blood pressure. Will you monitor it while I'm doing my exercise session in the office?

Yes, for those with hypertension Jasmine will take their blood pressure before they start doing the exercises and afterwards.

I'm diabetic; will you check my glucose levels during my exercise session?

Yes, if you have diabetes Jasmine will measure your glucose levels during and after exercise to make sure they don’t rise significantly.

Will I get the same exercise program as everyone else?

No, Jasmine provides customised programs that are tailored to each person and their health condition.

Can you also refer me to a group class?

Yes, if needed, Jasmine will recommend certain group exercise classes that can further benefit you.
